Spaced Repetition: How to Remember What You Learn

Whatever you studied last night is already decaying, and most of it is gone within a day or two, not because your memory is bad but because that is how untouched memory behaves for everyone.

Resetting that decay on a schedule is enough to stop it.

What spaced repetition is

Spaced repetition is a learning method where you review information at increasing intervals over time rather than all at once. You see a fact today, again in two days, again in a week, again in a month. Each gap is longer.

The logic is simple. Reviewing something the moment before you would have forgotten it forces your brain to work to retrieve it, and that effort is what makes the memory durable. Review too soon and the fact is still fresh, so the review does nothing. Review too late and it is already gone, so you are relearning from scratch. Spaced repetition targets the narrow window in between.

It is the opposite of massed practice, better known as cramming. Cramming packs all your reviews into one block. Spaced repetition spreads them out, and that single change is what turns short-term recall into long-term knowledge.

The forgetting curve and why you lose what you learn

To see why spacing works, you have to start with how fast memory decays. In the 1880s, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus ran a long series of experiments on himself, memorizing lists of nonsense syllables and tracking how much he could recall over time.

The result was the forgetting curve, one of the oldest findings in psychology. It shows that memory for new material drops sharply at first, you lose a large share within the first day or two, then the decline slows and levels off. Without any review, much of what you learn is unrecoverable within a week.

The curve is not fixed, though, and that is the whole opportunity. Every time you successfully recall the material, you reset the curve and it falls more slowly the next time. The first review might buy you a few days. The second buys you a couple of weeks. The third buys you a month or more. You are not fighting forgetting once, you are flattening the curve again and again until the memory barely fades at all.

The science behind spacing

Ebbinghaus described the problem. A century of research worked out the solution, and the evidence is unusually strong.

The core finding is called the spacing effect: distributing your study sessions across time beats bunching them together, even when the total time spent is identical. A 2006 review by Cepeda and colleagues pulled together hundreds of experiments and confirmed it holds across ages, materials, and types of test, often by a wide margin.

Two things make spacing work:

  • Effortful retrieval. Pulling a fact back after a delay is harder than rereading it while it is fresh, and that difficulty is what strengthens the memory trace. Easy review teaches your brain almost nothing.
  • Reconsolidation. Each time you retrieve a memory and it survives, the brain partly rebuilds and stabilizes it. Spacing gives the memory time to settle between reviews so each return session does real work.

How to do spaced repetition step by step

You do not need software to start. The method is a loop you can run with index cards, a notebook, or an app:

  1. Break the material into small testable units. One fact, definition, or question per card. Big vague chunks do not work, because you cannot cleanly recall them.
  2. Learn it and recall it once. Read the unit, look away, and retrieve it from memory the same day. This first recall is your baseline.
  3. Schedule the next review for a day or two later. Long enough that the fact has started to fade, short enough that you can still pull it back.
  4. Widen the gap each time you get it right. Two days, then a week, then two weeks, then a month. Success earns a longer interval.
  5. Reset the interval when you fail. If you blank on a card, it goes back to a short gap and climbs again from there.

That last rule is the engine. Easy material drifts further and further apart so you barely touch it, while the handful of facts you keep missing come back often. Your effort flows automatically to your weak spots.

The exact numbers matter less than the pattern of widening gaps, but a concrete schedule helps you start.

Each interval is roughly two to three times the last. That ratio is a practical sweet spot, long enough to make retrieval effortful, short enough to catch the fact before it slips entirely.

One useful adjustment: tie your longest intervals to when you actually need the material. If an exam is six weeks out, compress the schedule so your last few reviews land in the final two weeks rather than trailing off after it. The goal is peak recall on the day that counts.

Apps like Anki that automate the timing

Tracking dozens of cards by hand gets unworkable fast, which is why most people who stick with spaced repetition use software. The app does one job: it decides what to show you each day and when each card comes back.

The best-known tool is Anki, a free, open-source flashcard program. After you see a card, you rate how well you recalled it, and Anki schedules the next review accordingly. A card you found easy drifts weeks or months out. A card you fumbled returns tomorrow. You never decide what to study next, you just clear the day's queue.

A few things separate the apps from paper:

  • Per-card scheduling. Every card moves on its own timeline based on your performance, not a single shared interval.
  • Automatic backlog handling. Miss a few days and the app reshuffles the queue instead of dumping everything on you at once.
  • Sync across devices. Review on your phone in a queue, on your laptop at a desk, same deck.

Anki is the most flexible option, and others like SuperMemo, Quizlet, and the spaced-repetition features built into note apps follow the same core logic. The tool is interchangeable. The method underneath is what does the work.

Combine spaced repetition with active recall

Spacing tells you when to review. It says nothing about how, and the how is where most people lose the benefit.

The mistake is to "review" by rereading the answer. That is passive, and it rebuilds none of the memory. The fix is active recall: every review must be an attempt to retrieve the answer from memory before you check it. Cover the answer, say or write it, then reveal it.

The evidence for pairing them is strong. In a 2011 study in Science, Karpicke and Blunt found that students who practiced retrieving information clearly outperformed students who simply restudied it, and the gap was large. Retrieval is the active ingredient. Spacing just times the doses.

Put together, the rule is short: retrieve, do not reread, and do it on a widening schedule. Common spaced repetition mistakes

The method is simple, which is exactly why it is easy to run badly. The usual failures:

  • Reviewing too early. Stacking reviews close together feels diligent but defeats the point. If the fact is still fresh, the review is wasted.
  • Passive review. Rereading the card instead of retrieving the answer. The struggle to recall is the part that works, so skipping it skips the benefit.
  • Cards that are too big. A flashcard asking you to "explain the French Revolution" cannot be recalled cleanly. Break it into small, specific units with one answer each.
  • Letting the backlog scare you off. Miss a week and the queue piles up, and many people quit at that point. Clear the oldest cards first, or let the app rebalance, and the pile shrinks fast.
