8 Memory Techniques to Remember Almost Anything
"Some people are just born with a good memory" is one of the most persistent myths in learning, and it happens to be false. Memory athletes who recall hundreds of digits in minutes have brains that scan as entirely ordinary.
What they have instead is technique, and technique can be learned by anyone willing to practice it.
A 2017 study trained ordinary participants in one such method and found their recall more than doubled after six weeks, with brain activity shifting to resemble that of world-class memory competitors. Below are 8 techniques like that one, what each does, and when to reach for it.

Build a memory palace (the method of loci)
The single most powerful technique on this list is also the oldest. A memory palace, formally the method of loci, stores information in an imagined physical space you already know well, like your home or your walk to work.
You place each thing you want to remember at a specific spot along a familiar route. To recall the list, you mentally walk the route and "see" each item where you left it. The technique dates back to ancient Greek and Roman orators who used it to deliver long speeches without notes.
It is not folklore. A 2017 study in Neuron trained ordinary participants in the method of loci and found their recall more than doubled after six weeks, with brain-activity patterns shifting to resemble those of world-class memory athletes.
Here is how to build one:
- Pick a familiar place. Your apartment works. Define a fixed path through it, the same order every time.
- Choose anchor points. Front door, then couch, then kitchen sink, and so on. Five to ten to start.
- Place vivid images. Turn each item into an exaggerated, strange picture and put it at an anchor. To remember "milk," picture a cow flooding your hallway.
- Walk the route to recall. Retrace the path in your mind and collect each image in order.
The method of loci is overkill for a single fact, but for ordered lists, speeches, and exam material it has no equal.
Group information with chunking
Your working memory is small. The classic estimate, from George Miller's 1956 paper "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two," is that we hold only about seven items at once. Chunking beats that limit by bundling small units into larger meaningful ones.
A phone number is the everyday example. Nobody remembers 8005554321 as ten separate digits. You store it as three chunks: 800, 555, 4321. Same information, a third of the load.
To use chunking deliberately:
- Group by pattern or meaning. Break a long sequence into 3 to 4 unit blocks.
- Find existing structure. Dates, area codes, and acronyms are pre-made chunks.
- Stack chunks into bigger chunks as the smaller ones become automatic.

Turn facts into mnemonics
A mnemonic is any device that links hard-to-remember information to something easier to retrieve. The memory palace is technically one mnemonic, but the word usually refers to smaller tricks: rhymes, phrases, songs, and associations.
"Thirty days hath September" is a mnemonic. So is "righty tighty, lefty loosey." They work because your brain holds patterned, rhyming, or meaningful material far better than dry facts. A 2015 review in Frontiers in Psychology found mnemonic strategies reliably improved recall across age groups, including in classroom settings.
The trick is to build associations that are personal and a little absurd. The stranger the link, the stickier it is. To remember someone named Rose, picture a rose blooming from their collar. Bland images fade. Vivid, odd ones stick.
Compress lists into acronyms
Acronyms are a focused type of mnemonic worth their own mention because they handle one job so well: remembering items in a set, often in order.
You take the first letter of each item and form a word or phrase. Medical students remember the cranial nerves this way. Music students use "Every Good Boy Does Fine" for the lines of the treble clef. ROYGBIV holds the colors of the rainbow in sequence.
Two variants cover most needs:
- Acronyms form a single pronounceable word from the first letters, like SCUBA or NASA.
- Acrostics form a full sentence where each word's first letter is the cue, useful when the letters do not spell anything.
Build your own by listing what you need to remember, pulling the first letters, and rearranging them into the most memorable word or sentence you can. The more ridiculous the sentence, the better it holds.
Lock it in with spaced repetition
Memorizing something once is not the same as keeping it. Memory decays on a predictable schedule, mapped by Hermann Ebbinghaus and his forgetting curve: you lose a large share of new material within days unless you revisit it.
Spaced repetition fights that decay by reviewing information at widening intervals, just as you are about to forget it. Review today, then in two days, then a week, then a month. Each successful recall flattens the curve and pushes the next review further out.
Spaced repetition is the highest-leverage habit for anything you need to retain long term: vocabulary, terminology, facts. It pairs naturally with the next technique.
Test yourself with active recall
Rereading feels productive and teaches you almost nothing. The far stronger move is to close the material and force yourself to retrieve it from memory. That is active recall.
In a 2011 study in Science, Karpicke and Blunt found that students who practiced retrieving information outperformed students who simply reread it, and the gap was large. Pulling a fact out of your head strengthens the path to it in a way that putting it back in front of your eyes never does.
In practice, active recall looks like this:
- Close the book after a section and write down the key points from memory.
- Turn headings into questions and answer them without looking.
- Use flashcards with the prompt on one side and the answer hidden.

Make it stick with visualization
Your brain is built for images. We evolved to remember places and faces long before we read words, which is why concrete pictures outlast abstract text. Visualization turns information into mental imagery so it has something visual to hang on.
This is the engine inside the memory palace, but you can use it on its own. To remember an abstract idea, give it a physical form. Picture "inflation" as a balloon swelling until prices pop out of it. The image is easier to recall than the definition, and it drags the meaning back with it.
Three rules make visual memory stronger:
- Exaggerate. Bigger, brighter, and stranger images stick harder than realistic ones.
- Add motion. A moving scene beats a static one.
- Involve yourself. Picture you interacting with the image, not just observing it.
Connect ideas with the link and story method
When you need to remember several items in order and do not want to build a full palace, chain them into a narrative. The link method, also called the story method, ties each item to the next with a vivid action so recalling one pulls up the rest.
Say you need eggs, a hammer, and a candle. Picture an egg cracking open, a hammer leaping out and smashing a candle into wax confetti. One absurd scene, three items, recalled in sequence. The story is the thread; pull it and the whole list comes along.
This works because narrative is how human memory naturally organizes events. A disconnected list has no handholds. A story gives every item a cause and a consequence, so each one cues the one after it. Which technique to use when
No single technique covers everything, so match the tool to the task:
