RSVP Speed Reading Test
Words flash at the pace you choose, your eyes never move, and a comprehension quiz shows what you actually retained. How fast can you really go?
Words flash one at a time. A 5-question comprehension check follows.
What is RSVP reading?
RSVP, short for rapid serial visual presentation, flips how reading works. In normal reading your eyes hop across the line in small jumps called saccades, pausing to fixate on words and frequently sliding backwards to re-read. Those mechanics are where most of your reading time actually goes. RSVP removes them: every word appears in the same spot, one at a time, so your eyes stay still and the text comes to you.
With eye travel gone, most readers can follow text far above their normal pace almost immediately, and the format also suppresses subvocalization, the inner voice that caps normal reading near talking speed. That is why RSVP is the engine inside most speed reading apps. The honest tradeoff: with no ability to glance back, comprehension falls off faster at high speeds, which is why this test checks understanding instead of just clocking the slider. RSVP test vs. the classic reading test
The two tests measure different things. The classic test times you reading a normal passage, eye movement, regressions and all, so it reflects how you actually read every day. The RSVP test shows your potential when the mechanical overhead is stripped away, which makes it a great training tool and an eye-opening demo of how much speed your eye habits cost you. For an honest baseline, take both and compare.
Your ceiling when eye movement and re-reading are removed.

What is RSVP reading?
RSVP stands for rapid serial visual presentation. Instead of your eyes traveling across lines of text, single words flash at a fixed point on the screen, one after another, at a speed you control. Because your eyes never move, the two big mechanical costs of reading, eye travel and re-reading, are removed entirely. It is the technique behind most speed reading apps.
Is RSVP reading faster than normal reading?
In raw words per minute, yes. With eye movement and regressions eliminated, most people can follow RSVP text at 400 to 600 WPM almost immediately, well above the 238 WPM adult average. The catch is retention: because you cannot glance back at a sentence, comprehension drops faster at high speeds than it does in normal reading. That is why this test ends with a quiz.
What RSVP speed should I start with?
Start around 250 to 300 WPM, which feels brisk but comfortable for most readers. Move up in steps of 25 to 50 WPM and stay at a level until comprehension holds at roughly 75 percent or better. Chasing the slider to 700 on day one is fun exactly once, and then the quiz humbles you.
Why do I remember less with RSVP reading?
Normal reading lets you regress: your eyes quietly jump back to re-check a name or re-read a clause, and that back-tracking supports memory. RSVP removes that safety net, so your working memory has to hold everything in one forward pass. Retention improves with practice, but most researchers treat very high RSVP speeds as skimming rather than deep reading. Slow down when the material actually matters.
